Apple has officially entered the foldable smartphone market with the launch of iPhone Duo, its first-ever foldable iPhone.

Announced on September 9, 2026, iPhone Duo combines Apple’s familiar iPhone experience with a completely new folding design. When opened, the device features a 7.6-inch display, while the outer display measures 5.4 inches when the phone is folded.

For Apple users in New Zealand, the launch is particularly significant because iPhone Duo is confirmed for the New Zealand market, with availability starting October 23, 2026. Apple’s New Zealand pricing starts at NZ$4,199 for the 256GB model.

A Foldable iPhone Has Finally Arrived

Foldable smartphones have been available from other manufacturers for several years, but Apple has taken a different approach with iPhone Duo.

The company says the device is designed to combine the portability of a traditional smartphone with the larger viewing area of a tablet-like display.

When closed, iPhone Duo has a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR outer display. When opened, the phone expands into a 7.6-inch folding display, giving users significantly more screen space for entertainment, productivity, gaming and multitasking.

Both displays use the same aspect ratio, allowing content to transition more naturally between the folded and unfolded positions.

Apple has also added a nano-texture finish to the inner display to reduce reflections and glare while helping make the fold less visually noticeable. The displays support ProMotion, Always-On functionality and up to 3,000 nits of outdoor brightness.

Built With Titanium and Designed for Durability

One of the biggest questions surrounding foldable smartphones is durability.

Apple says iPhone Duo uses a Grade 5 titanium construction along with a specially engineered hinge system. The hinge contains more than 100 components and is designed to support the centre of the folding display while providing a smooth opening and closing experience.

The phone also features Ceramic Shield protection and an IP68 rating for splash, water and dust resistance.

Apple says the front Ceramic Shield 2 offers three times better scratch resistance than the previous generation, while the inner folding display uses additional protective layers designed to withstand everyday use.

A20 Pro Brings Pro-Level Performance

Under the hood, iPhone Duo is powered by Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, the same processor family used in the iPhone 18 Pro models.

Apple says the chip includes a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU and a dual 16-core Neural Engine designed to handle demanding applications and on-device AI workloads.

The company claims iPhone Duo delivers up to 35 percent better sustained performance than iPhone 17 Pro, while the CPU is up to 20 percent faster than the A19 Pro.

The A20 Pro is also built using a 2-nanometre process and includes increased memory bandwidth, giving the foldable iPhone the processing power needed for gaming, multitasking and AI features.

Camera Features Get a Foldable Twist

Apple has also designed the camera experience around the phone’s folding form factor.

iPhone Duo features a 48MP Fusion Main camera and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera, along with a 12MP Center Stage front camera.

The main camera includes optical-quality 2x zoom and supports high-resolution photography. Apple says the camera system is designed to perform well in low-light conditions and can record 4K video at up to 120 frames per second in Dolby Vision.

The foldable design introduces several new camera features.

Smart Take

Smart Take uses on-device AI to analyse a scene and automatically capture a photo when people are ready, potentially making group photographs easier.

Duo Preview

Duo Preview uses the outer display as a live preview, allowing people being photographed to see the framing and position themselves more easily.

Duo FaceTime

The outer display can also be used during FaceTime, allowing people nearby to participate without everyone having to crowd around the same screen.

These features show how Apple is trying to make the folding mechanism more than just a larger display.

iOS 27 Is Designed Around the Foldable Display

The hardware is only part of Apple’s strategy.

iPhone Duo runs iOS 27, which has been redesigned to take advantage of the two-display experience.

When the device is opened, users can place two apps side by side using Split View. Apple says users can also open two windows from the same app, such as Safari, making comparison and multitasking easier.

The system can automatically adapt content as the phone is folded, unfolded or rotated.

Apple has also redesigned elements such as the Dynamic Island, navigation controls and the Home Screen to make better use of the available space.

For people using their phones for work, this could be one of the most important aspects of iPhone Duo.

Instead of switching repeatedly between applications, users can have two apps visible at the same time. This could be useful for email and documents, video calls and notes, or browsing and messaging.

Apple Intelligence and the New Siri AI

Artificial intelligence is another major part of Apple’s iPhone Duo experience.

The device supports Apple Intelligence and the new Siri AI, which Apple says can understand personal context and interact with information across apps such as messages, email and photos.

Siri AI can also use onscreen awareness to understand what a user is viewing and help take actions based on that information.

Apple says Siri AI will initially roll out as a beta with iOS 27.

The company is also emphasising privacy, saying Apple Intelligence uses on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute for supported AI tasks.

For users who increasingly rely on smartphones for writing, research, communication and content creation, the combination of a larger display and AI could become one of the phone’s biggest selling points.

Battery Life and Charging

Despite the slim foldable design, Apple says iPhone Duo can deliver substantial battery life.

The device uses a dual-battery architecture, with a battery on each side of the foldable design.

Apple reports up to:

  • 31 hours of video playback using the inner display
  • 44 hours of video playback using the outer display
  • Up to 24 hours of usage when both displays are used equally

Fast charging can take the phone to 50 percent in around 20 minutes under Apple’s stated conditions. Wireless charging can reach 50 percent in around 30 minutes using compatible MagSafe or Qi2 charging.

eSIM-Only Design

Another notable change is connectivity.

Apple says iPhone Duo has an eSIM-only design worldwide, eliminating the physical SIM card slot.

According to Apple, eSIM technology is supported by more than 500 carriers globally.

For New Zealand users, this means customers should check that their preferred mobile provider supports the necessary eSIM activation and transfer process before purchasing the phone.

iPhone Duo Price in New Zealand

Apple has confirmed iPhone Duo for New Zealand.

The New Zealand Apple Store currently lists the following prices:

StoragePrice
256GBNZ$4,199
512GBNZ$4,599
1TBNZ$5,399
2TBNZ$6,599

The phone is offered in Star White and Night Sky.

Apple says pre-orders in New Zealand begin at 1:00am NZDT on October 17, 2026, with availability from October 23, 2026.

The difference between Apple’s global announcement timing and New Zealand’s local pre-order time is worth noting: the global announcement states October 16 in U.S. time, while Apple’s NZ store lists October 17 at 1:00am NZDT.

New Accessories for iPhone Duo

Apple is also introducing dedicated accessories for the foldable phone.

The iPhone Duo Case uses a two-part design to protect both sides of the device and is compatible with MagSafe and Qi2 charging.

The iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand is designed for viewing content, reading and hands-free FaceTime calls.

In New Zealand, Apple’s current store listings show the iPhone Duo Case at NZ$149 and the Folio with Kickstand at NZ$249.

What Does iPhone Duo Mean for Apple?

The launch represents a major shift for Apple’s smartphone strategy.

For years, the iPhone’s basic design has remained familiar even as cameras, processors and software have improved. iPhone Duo changes that formula by introducing a completely different physical format.

The interesting part is that Apple is not presenting the device simply as an iPhone that folds.

The company has redesigned iOS around the larger screen, developed new camera experiences around the folding mechanism and added multitasking features that take advantage of the additional display area.

That hardware-software integration could be Apple’s biggest advantage in the increasingly competitive foldable smartphone market.

What It Could Mean for Kiwi Users

For users in New Zealand, iPhone Duo could appeal particularly to people who want a larger screen without carrying both a smartphone and tablet.

Students could use the larger display for reading and note-taking. Professionals could use Split View for emails, documents and video meetings. Content creators could benefit from the larger preview area and flexible camera positioning.

Families could also find the folding design useful for video calls, photography and entertainment.

However, the price is significant.

Starting at NZ$4,199, iPhone Duo is positioned firmly as a premium device rather than a mainstream smartphone. Buyers will need to decide whether the foldable display, new multitasking features, camera capabilities and AI tools justify the substantial price difference compared with conventional iPhones.

The Bigger Picture

Apple’s entry into foldable phones could accelerate competition across the smartphone industry.

Foldable devices are moving beyond being experimental products and increasingly becoming premium alternatives to conventional smartphones. Apple’s approach could encourage more consumers to consider foldable phones while putting additional pressure on other manufacturers to improve hardware, software and durability.

For Apple, the challenge will be proving that the foldable format offers meaningful everyday advantages rather than simply providing a new way to use an iPhone.

The answer will ultimately depend on how people use iPhone Duo once it reaches customers.

For now, one thing is clear: Apple has officially entered the foldable smartphone era.
