Waves Up to 11 Metres Hit Wellington Coast as Emergency Lifted
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Wellington residents experienced a dramatic day of severe coastal weather as enormous waves, some reaching up to 11 metres, pounded the city’s southern coastline. Emergency officials responded swiftly to protect communities after dangerous swells, strong winds, and coastal flooding threatened homes, roads, and public safety.

Authorities had earlier declared a local state of emergency in vulnerable coastal areas as a precautionary measure. However, after conditions gradually improved and the immediate threat reduced, officials later confirmed the emergency declaration had been lifted.

MetService Monitored Extreme Swell Event

Weather experts closely tracked the unusual swell event as wave heights increased significantly along Wellington’s coastline. Measurements showed waves entering Wellington Harbour reached approximately 11 metres, making it one of the more significant coastal weather events seen in recent years.

Strong wind gusts added to the challenge, with rough seas and coastal spray affecting several areas. Residents were urged to stay away from beaches, rocky shorelines, and exposed coastal roads until conditions eased.

Reminder of New Zealand’s Coastal Weather Risks

The event highlights the vulnerability of New Zealand’s coastal communities to extreme weather and ocean conditions. Wellington’s exposed southern coastline is particularly susceptible to large swells generated by powerful weather systems in the Southern Ocean.

Emergency management agencies continue to stress the importance of preparedness during severe weather events, encouraging residents to stay informed, follow evacuation advice when issued, and avoid unnecessary travel in high-risk areas.
