Are New Zealanders Overlooking Their Own Country for Overseas Holidays?

It’s a familiar trend across New Zealand many people spend months planning overseas holidays to places like Bali, Australia, Thailand, or Fiji, while some of the most beautiful destinations in their own country remain unexplored.

For many Kiwis, international travel feels more exciting. It offers a sense of escape, something completely different from daily life, and often carries the feeling of a “real holiday.” Meanwhile, local travel can sometimes feel too familiar, almost like it doesn’t count as a proper getaway.

This raises an interesting question: are New Zealanders overlooking their own country while chasing experiences overseas?

What’s Driving This Trend

It’s not always about preferring international travel over local travel. Several factors influence this choice.

One major reason is the desire for something different. Flying to another country creates a stronger sense of adventure. Different food, culture, weather, and lifestyle make overseas trips feel more memorable.

Social media also plays a big role. Travel content is filled with tropical beaches, luxury resorts, and famous international destinations. Seeing friends post from Bali or Europe naturally creates more excitement around overseas travel than a weekend trip to a nearby town.

Surprisingly, cost can also be a factor. Many travellers feel that overseas holidays sometimes offer better value. Flights to parts of Asia or Australia can appear more affordable than domestic flights within New Zealand, especially during holiday seasons. Accommodation and food in some overseas destinations may also seem cheaper compared to popular local tourist spots.

The Places Many People Miss

What often happens is that people realise later they have barely explored their own country.

Some have never properly travelled through the South Island despite living in New Zealand for years. Places like Milford Sound, Lake Tekapo, Mount Cook, and the West Coast remain on the “one day” list instead of becoming real travel experiences.

Others overlook small towns that offer incredible scenery and unique charm. Places like Akaroa, Russell, Arrowtown, and Hokitika often surprise visitors because they offer experiences that feel far removed from busy city life.

Even short road trips just a few hours away can create memorable holidays. Coastal escapes, hidden beaches, quiet mountain towns, and scenic drives often provide the kind of reset people look for overseas.

Finding the Right Balance

This isn’t really about choosing local travel over international travel. Both have value.

Overseas holidays bring cultural experiences and a fresh perspective that local trips cannot always provide. At the same time, domestic travel helps people connect more deeply with the country they live in.

The ideal approach is balance. A trip overseas for adventure and new experiences, combined with regular local exploration, creates a fuller travel lifestyle.

Many people who start exploring New Zealand properly often say the same thing they wish they had done it earlier.

Conclusion

New Zealand travel is often underestimated by locals until they experience it for themselves.

Sometimes the most impressive destinations are not across the world but just a few hours away. While overseas holidays will always be exciting, there is real value in discovering what exists closer to home.

The beauty of New Zealand is that extraordinary places are often hiding in plain sight—waiting for locals to stop overlooking them.
