A large vegetation fire in Albert Town near Wānaka turned into a frightening night for local residents on Saturday, August 22, after flames spread through trees and scrub close to residential properties.

The fire was reported at about 7.30pm in an area behind homes near Lagoon Avenue, Hunt Place and McLellan Place. Strong winds helped the flames move through roughly a kilometre of vegetation, sending smoke, embers and a bright orange glow across the area.

Residents Told to Leave Their Homes

Police assisted with evacuations as emergency crews responded to the rapidly developing fire. A total of 22 households were evacuated during the evening.

At one point, emergency officials believed several properties were at risk. Despite the proximity of the fire to homes, no houses were reported to have caught fire.

For residents living nearby, the situation developed quickly.

One resident told 1News that they were alerted at around 7.30pm and told to evacuate immediately after the fire was spotted along the bank.

Other residents described seeing flames rising above the treeline, while embers were reportedly carried towards nearby streets.

Firefighters Face Strong Winds and Hotspots

Fire crews from Wānaka, Luggate, Lake Hāwea and Cromwell attended the incident.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand deployed eight pumping appliances along with three support vehicles. Crews worked from multiple points as they attempted to stop the fire from spreading further.

Strong winds made the response more difficult. Firefighters had to continue repositioning equipment to reach hotspots and areas where the fire was still threatening to flare up.

Officials also warned of ember transfers, with burning material being carried by the wind beyond the main fire area.

No Homes Were Lost

Although the fire came close to residential properties, Fire and Emergency confirmed that no houses had caught fire.

Residents were able to begin returning home shortly after 10pm once emergency services had assessed the situation. Fire crews remained at the scene dealing with hotspots before leaving shortly before 11pm.

By Sunday morning, officials said the fire was out and contained. Heavy rain also helped firefighters extinguish remaining areas of concern and allowed the response operation to begin winding down.

Cause of Fire Remains Unknown

The cause of the blaze had not been established as of Sunday morning.

Firefighters were continuing to assess what started the vegetation fire, while emergency agencies worked through the aftermath of the incident.

The fire serves as a reminder of how quickly vegetation fires can become dangerous when strong winds are present, particularly when vegetation is located close to residential areas.

A Frightening Night for the Community

For the 22 households that had to leave their homes, Saturday night’s fire was an unexpected and unsettling experience.

While the blaze caused no reported damage to homes, the sight of flames towering above trees and embers moving through the surrounding area highlighted the risks faced by communities located close to large areas of vegetation.

Emergency services acted quickly to contain the fire, with firefighters working through challenging conditions to prevent the flames from reaching nearby properties.

As the investigation into the cause continues, residents can now return to their homes following a night that many in Albert Town are unlikely to forget.
