New Zealand Floods – Severe storms sweeping across New Zealand’s North Island have triggered widespread flooding and landslides, with one of the most serious incidents occurring at a popular campsite near Mount Maunganui. Authorities have confirmed that several people are missing after a landslide tore through part of the campground, prompting a large-scale search and rescue operation.

The recent New Zealand Floods have led to devastating impacts across the region, affecting countless lives.

The landslide struck during heavy rainfall, burying sections of the campsite including tents, campervans, and shared facilities. Emergency crews arriving at the scene described extensive destruction, with vehicles displaced and thick mud covering large areas of the site. Police, firefighters, and specialist rescue teams are working together, supported by helicopters, to locate anyone who may be trapped.

East Coast Hit Hard by Extreme Weather

The Mount Maunganui incident is part of a broader weather emergency affecting much of the eastern and northern North Island. Intense rainfall over a short period overwhelmed rivers, saturated hillsides, and caused widespread flooding, road closures, and power outages. Several communities have been cut off as infrastructure struggles to cope with the scale of the storm.

Emergency Management Minister Mark Mitchell described parts of the east coast as looking like a “war zone,” highlighting the severity of the damage and the pressure on emergency services. Local states of emergency have been declared in multiple districts to enable faster response and support for affected residents.

In other areas, homes have been damaged or evacuated due to flooding and slips, with additional reports of missing persons and injuries. Emergency shelters have been opened, and residents have been urged to follow official safety advice.

Rescue Operations Continue Under Risky Conditions

Search and rescue efforts at the campsite and surrounding areas remain ongoing, though teams are working cautiously due to unstable ground and the risk of further landslides. Crews are using heavy equipment where possible, while also relying on trained personnel to search debris by hand.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon expressed his support for affected communities and praised emergency workers for their efforts. He warned that even as some weather conditions ease, the risk from saturated land remains high, and further disruptions are possible.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have urged the public to avoid non-essential travel in impacted regions.

FAQs:

1. What caused the landslide at the Mount Maunganui campsite?
The landslide was triggered by extremely heavy rainfall, which saturated the ground and caused unstable slopes above the campsite to collapse.

2. How many people are missing?
Officials have confirmed that several people, including children, are unaccounted for. Exact numbers may change as rescue operations continue.

3. What emergency response is underway?
Police, fire services, medical teams, and specialist rescue units are actively searching affected areas, supported by helicopters and heavy machinery.

4. Is there still danger from the storms?
Yes. Although some weather warnings may ease, saturated ground and flood risks remain, increasing the chance of further slips or flooding.
