Growing up Kiwi-Indian often means walking a line between two beautiful cultures but it’s not always easy. At home, you’re expected to follow Indian traditions, respect elders, and uphold family values. Outside, you’re immersed in Kiwi school culture, social norms, and pop culture.
This dual identity can create internal conflicts. Am I Indian enough? Am I too different? Why don’t others understand my background? For many youth, these questions linger silently and deeply.
Mental health among Indian youth is still a sensitive topic. In many households, struggles with anxiety, self-esteem, or identity confusion aren’t openly talked about. The pressure to perform academically, fit in socially, and please parents can sometimes be overwhelming.
We believe this is a conversation worth opening. Schools, families, and community leaders need to recognize these challenges and build safe spaces for expression and support.
Culturally aware counsellors, inclusive school environments, and open conversations at home can all help. But we need more expert perspectives on how to support our young people in a way that honours both their Indian and Kiwi identities.
